Health and Safety policy

Man and Van Rotherhithe Health and Safety Policy

Man and Van Rotherhithe is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for our employees, contractors, customers and members of the public. This policy sets out how we manage health and safety in connection with our removal and transport services, including packing, loading, unloading and the movement of goods.

Our Health and Safety Responsibilities

We recognise our duty to conduct our operations in a way that prevents injury, protects health and minimises risks. Management is responsible for implementing this policy, providing appropriate resources and ensuring that safe working practices are followed at all times. All workers are required to cooperate with these measures, follow instructions, use equipment correctly and report any hazards or incidents without delay.

Objectives and Commitments

Our main health and safety objectives are to prevent accidents, reduce work-related ill health and continuously improve our standards. To achieve these objectives, Man and Van Rotherhithe is committed to:

Identifying and controlling risks associated with household and commercial removals. Providing information, instruction and training so that staff can work safely and competently. Maintaining vehicles, lifting equipment and tools in a safe and roadworthy condition. Planning removal work to minimise manual handling, trip hazards and other foreseeable dangers. Encouraging open communication about safety concerns, near misses and improvement ideas.

Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work

Before undertaking removal tasks, we assess the risks associated with the property, access points, parking, stairways, lifts, and the items being moved. Where necessary, we adapt the work plan to manage any identified hazards. This may include using additional staff, employing specialist equipment, adjusting routes or scheduling, or temporarily restricting access to certain areas while work is in progress.

We develop and follow safe systems of work for typical activities such as dismantling and reassembling furniture, carrying items up and down stairs, using trolleys and carrying out loading and unloading at kerbside. These systems are reviewed and updated where working practices or regulations change, or following any significant incident.

Manual Handling and Lifting

Manual handling is a core part of our removal services, and we take particular care to minimise the risk of strains, sprains and other musculoskeletal injuries. Staff receive training in safe lifting techniques, team lifting, and correct use of handling aids such as sack trucks, dollies and moving straps.

Heavy, bulky or awkward items are assessed before being moved. Where the weight or shape presents a risk, we use additional operatives or mechanical assistance, or we decline to move the item until a safe method can be established. Operatives are instructed not to attempt lifts that could endanger themselves, colleagues or customers.

Vehicle and Driving Safety

Our vehicles are maintained, inspected and cleaned regularly to ensure they remain safe, secure and suitable for transporting goods. Drivers are responsible for daily visual checks and for reporting any defects immediately, so that corrective action can be taken.

Loads are secured carefully to prevent movement during transit, using appropriate restraints and padding. Drivers must comply with traffic laws, drive considerately in residential and commercial areas, and allow extra time for manoeuvring and parking larger vehicles. Fatigue is managed through sensible scheduling, and drivers are expected to take adequate breaks and never to drive under the influence of alcohol, drugs or any substance that impairs performance.

Protecting Customers and the Public

Our teams work in and around homes, offices and public spaces, and we take steps to protect anyone who may be affected by our activities. Where possible, we plan access to reduce congestion and avoid blocking entrances, fire exits or public walkways.

Trip hazards such as trailing straps, packing materials or tools are kept to a minimum and cleared promptly. When required, we may temporarily restrict access to an area while heavy lifting or vehicle movements are taking place, and we will explain these measures to customers on site.

Use of Equipment and Personal Protective Equipment

All equipment used in our removal operations must be suitable for its intended purpose and used in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions and company guidance. Damaged or defective equipment is to be taken out of service and reported immediately.

Where necessary, personal protective equipment is provided, such as protective footwear, gloves, high visibility clothing or other items appropriate to the task. Staff are required to use this equipment correctly and to look after it, reporting any loss or damage without delay.

Training, Information and Supervision

We provide induction training for new staff and ongoing instruction for existing workers, covering safe lifting techniques, use of equipment, vehicle safety, hazard awareness and emergency procedures. Supervision is proportionate to the experience and competence of each team member, ensuring that less experienced staff are supported by more experienced colleagues.

Health and safety information is communicated through briefings, toolbox talks and written guidance. We encourage all members of our team to ask questions, seek clarification and contribute suggestions for improving safety.

Incident Reporting and Emergency Procedures

All accidents, injuries, near misses, damage to property and dangerous occurrences must be reported as soon as practicable. We record and investigate such events to identify root causes and to implement measures that reduce the likelihood of recurrence.

Our teams are briefed on basic emergency procedures, including what to do in the event of fire, serious injury, road traffic incident or sudden illness. Where we are working at customer premises, we will comply with any specific emergency arrangements that apply to that site.

Review and Continuous Improvement

This health and safety policy is reviewed regularly to ensure it remains relevant to the nature and scale of our activities, and to reflect any changes in legal requirements or industry best practice. Feedback from staff and customers, along with incident investigations and inspections, is used to drive ongoing improvement.

By following this policy, Man and Van Rotherhithe aims to deliver reliable, efficient and safe removal services, protecting the wellbeing of our workforce, our customers and the wider community.
